Agnanta

The name Agnanta derives from the adverb "Agnantia" which means "gazing or looking from afar”. The first written testimony on Agnanta is in a Turkish contract of 1729, which refers to the areas and forests of Agnanta.

The city’s bus station is located approximately 55 km. north of Arta and 50 km. east of Ioannina. There are bus routes to both cities daily. The village center has an altitude of 650-700 meters (while the total height of the mountain is about 2.150 meters).

There are many water springs in the area (Kria Vrissi, Karoula, Halasmeno, Vrysmoura, Goura etc.) and dense forests with a variety of trees mainly fir trees, pine trees, arbutus, and heathers. Agnanta boasts for its rich vegetation. The beautiful landscape with its rich variety of shades that gradually adjust with the light and harmonize with the seasonal cycle of nature is absolutely breathtaking.

There are green hills surrounding the village. The hills of St. Elias and St. Christopher, almost within the village, are covered by high pine trees. The rest of them, including the nearest to the village (Gonia, Mentzeristra, Kampodouka, Aetos, Krokos and Theodouloi) are covered with fir trees.

The main village is bisected by a torrent, Agnantiti. There are many beautiful settlements in the area that go all the way from the east coast of Arachthos to the foot of the mountain: Frasta, Trypokozi, Makrykampos, Konakia, Strana. Other settlements are: Gorgousa, Livadia, Artissa, Dafni, Zifkos, Villia, Paleochori, Theodoulos and Skeza.

There are no more than 300 residents, while in the summer period many locals return to the village for their holidays. On the weekend of July 25th-27th the celebration of St. Paraskevi and the traditional fair take place in the village.
